Name:
Philippe Chartier came to Massachusetts with his brother Etienne probably in the 1850’s. For some reason Etienne moved back to Quebec. However, some of Etienne’s family may have stayed in the U.S. and some may have returned to Quebec. When the 1860 census was taken, the “Philip Carter” family was living in Holyoke (Hampden), Massachusetts. Philip ran a boarding house; Eleonore worked in a cotton mill. The census taker indicated that all of the family worked in a cotton mill which can not be true because of the age of the yournger children. When the 1870 census was taken, the “Philipp & Leonore Carter” family was living in Chicago (Cook), Illinois. Philipp was a carpenter; Charles was a machinist, Louis was a carpenter, and Joseph was an apprentice to a tin smith. When the 1880 census was taken, Leonore was a widow; and she was living with the Thomas and Lucy Rossiter family on Cummings St. in Omaha (Douglas), Nebraska. Lucy Rossiter is Leonore’s daughter. Thomas was amolder. Leonore was a nurse. Also in the household was Louise Carter, sister of Lucy Rossiter.
