- The exact spelling of Marie-Frederica’s surname is not known. In Dennison it is spelled Marentette, but others have it spelled Mettetal or Mattel. The connection of these three daughters to Joseph and Frederica is made with slight reservations. It is based upon the fact that Joseph and Frederica had three daughters. Mabel can not be found in the 1900 census, but Gertrude and Elizabeth Shorkey are shown as step-daughters of Chesley and Mary Woodworth in Lenox Township (Macomb), Michigan,. It is also based upon the fact that Mabel’s father, Joseph Shorkey, was a captain on a Great Lakes’ barge that sunk and Joseph drowned. We know that the Joseph Chartier who married Frederica Martinet was a sailor on the Great Lakes when the 1880 census was taken. According to “Mary Shorkey’s” obituary, she died in her home at 7757 Grover Point Drive in Fair Haven. After Joseph drowned, Mary married Robert Shorkey who was a relative of Joseph. Mary’s obituary said she was survived by 16 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren.
