- When Adele and Leon were born Zoel’s occupation is “quarryman”. When the 1900 census was taken, this family was living in Worcester (Worcester), Mass. Zoel was a machinist. In this census Helene said she was the mother of 7 children with all 7 living. In this census Zoel said he immigrated to the U.S. in 1869. When the 1910 census was taken, this family was living in Newton (Middlesex), Mass. Zoel was still a machinist. When the 1920 census was taken, Helene was now married to Alfred Lafleur. They lived at 19 New Springstor St? in Watertown. Also in the household were Blanche, Zoel, and Edmund Chartier. Blanche and Zoel are listed as step-children whereas Edmund, age 7, is listed as a nephew. The census says Edmund was born in Maine, his father was born in Maine and his mother was born in Massachusetts. When the 1930 census was taken, “Ellen Chartier” was a widow living at 155 Spruce St. in Watertown. Also in her home was her son Zoel J. who was a meat cutter for a provision store, and her grandson Edmond Chartier, age 17, who was a draftsman for a sign company. This would indicate that the Edmund Chartier in the 1920 census was Helene’s grandson rather than her nephew. It probably also means that Edmund was the son of Edmund Joseph Chartier.
