  	When Clifford registered for the WWI draft, he was single and living at 636 Fillmore in Gary, Indiana. He was a checker for American Steel Foundry in Indiana Harbor, Indiana. He said he had defective eyesight. When the 1920 census was taken, Clifford was a loader in a steel mill. He was living as a roomer in the home of Mary Aspin at 528 ????? St. in Gary, Indiana. When the 1930 census was taken, Constance and Craig Lee Chartier were living in the home of Constance’s parents at 116 N. Bright St. in Whittier, California. Constance was a telephone operator and a divorcee. Clifford could not be found in the 1930 or 1940 census, but other records indicate he returned to Indiana after he and Constance were divorced. census, but he probably was living in Oregon or Washington. Clifford was a PVT (probably WWI) in the U.S. Army. Craig Lee Chartier enlisted in WWII on 18 Feb 1943. He was a private in Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA. When he enlisted he was 74” tall and weighed 156 pounds and had three years of high school. It looks like Clifford and Constance divorced shortly after Craig Lee was born because in the Whittier, Californian directory in 1926 and afterwards, she is listed as Mrs. Constance Chartier with the address of her parents. When the 1940 census was taken, Craig Chartier was living with his widowed grandfather, Oscar Sutton at 130-1/2 N. Bright St. in Whittier, California.
