- Robert Carter’s first wife was his first cousin, Phobe Watkins. He was an Electrical Engineer who graduated from the University of Minnesota in June 1908. R.J.S. CARTER first worked as an engineer for a contracting company. Then he started selling flour milling machinery, first for Allis-Chalmers, and later for Strong-Scott Manufacturing Company. In 1919 he co-founded with Howard Mayhew and C.W. Carter (no relation) the Carter-Mayhew Manufacturing Company, which made and sold grain-cleaning machinery. They sold the company in 1929, but R.J.S. Carter continued as President as President until 1936. Then he set up an office where he sold grain-milling machinery for several companies as their representative. He received patents for several milling machines and processes, which were sold to flour milling companies. He pursued his hobby of movie production after his retirement in 1953, which allowed him to travel to foreign countries taking movies of many people and their activities.
