- Francois Chartier, Jr. was already married with children when his father, mother, three younger brothers, and three younger sisters moved to Keeseville, NY in 1847. It appears that Francois, Jr. stayed in Quebec, but five of his children were married in Central Falls, Rhode Island where many textile mills were located. Many young French-Canadians went to work for these textile mills because of the lack of opportunities in Quebec. When the 1861 Canadian census was taken, this family was living in St-Luc (St-Jean), Quebec . Francois was a “menuiser (carpenter)”. Also in the household was Archange Audet, Eleonore’s mother. When the 1871 census was taken, this family was still in St-Luc and Francois was still a carpenter. The only children in the household were Malvina, Elmire, Hermine, Damien, and Henry. When the 1881 census was taken, Francois and Leonore were living in St-Jean (St-Jean). Francois was still a carpenter. Also in the household were the family of Gilbert and Josephine Lanoue and Malvina, Melina, Elmire and Hermine Chartier. When the 1900 census was taken, “Elinor Chartier” and her son, Joseph were living in the home of Napoleon and Hermine Beauvaisat 107 Sylvian St. in Central Falls (Providence), Rhode Island. Joseph says he is single and a music dealer.
