News: Welcome to our new site! All data from the old site (including photos) have now been uploaded (whew!)

I will now begin granting limited access to users that have requested it, however all edits will be reviewed by either Vernon CHARTIER or myself for the time being until we're sure the user knows how the new system works (and he and I are still learning it too!).

NOTE: The maps feature does not seem to work well on GOOGLE Chrome, so use the internet browser bundled with Windows.

    • Name Joseph CHARTIER
      • When the 1840 census was taken, there was a “Joseph Shorkey in the town of Clyde (St-Clair), Michigan. He was between 20 and 30. His wife was between 20 and 30. They had one daughter under 5 years old. When the 1850 census was taken, this family was living in Wales (St-Clair), Michigan. “Joseph Sheskey” was a farmer. The adjacent household was that of William and Charity Shirkey. When the 1860, 1870, and 1880 censuses were taken, this family was living in Wales (St-Clair), Michigan. Joseph was a farmer. The name was “Shirkey” in all of these censuses. Joseph came to Wales Township with his parents. At the death of his parents, he was left with a large family of children to take care of. He arranged homes for all of them, and took up government land, and this he cleared and continued to improve until his death by which time he had accumulated a fine farm of one hundred and sixty acres. He was also interested in the lumber business and engaged in the business as a jobber at various places. In the book “The History of St.Clair County” (1912) they have Sophronia dying in 1879, but she is in the 1880 census.
