News: Welcome to our new site! All data from the old site (including photos) have now been uploaded (whew!)

I will now begin granting limited access to users that have requested it, however all edits will be reviewed by either Vernon CHARTIER or myself for the time being until we're sure the user knows how the new system works (and he and I are still learning it too!).

NOTE: The maps feature does not seem to work well on GOOGLE Chrome, so use the internet browser bundled with Windows.

    • Name Nicholas Charles CHARTIER
      • Family name of CHARTIER changed to SHORTKEY, SHORKEY, or SHARKEY depending on Town Clerk. First 6 kids born in CANADA (though William & Napoleon are conditional), possibly Addie also. Joseph baptized in CANADA. Have not found Angeliques grave. Nicholas grave marker says SHARKEY, in same plot as son-in-law Albert SHACKETT.
When the 1860 census was taken, this family was living in Whiting (Addison), Vermont. Nicholas Shorkee was a farm laborer. When the 1870 census was taken, the family was still living in Whiting. In this census the family name is spelled and indexed as Carter for Napoleon and William; Shortker for the Nicholas family and Sharkey for Angeline and Jeddie. Living in the next household was Edward and Julie Myatt. When the 1880 census was taken, this family was living in Whiting (Addison), Vermont. Nicholas was a laborer. When the 1900 census was taken, Angeline was a widower living in the household of her son, Joseph Shorkey in Cornwall, Vermont.
Nicholas was a blacksmith by trade. As was the case for many Vermonters, winter called for alternate professions and the Shorkeys turned from farming to logging. The frozen conditions made it possible to harvest lumber from the nearby (adjacent) Cornwall/Whiting swamp. Several months before his death, Nicholas was hit on the head by a falling tree. The resulting concussion eventually killed him.
