- As a young man, Ernest P. Chartier was a member of the Montreal police force. According to family members, he eventually moved to Western Canada where he joined the Northwest Mounted Police (RCMP). However, when he registered for the WWI draft on 23 May 1917, he was living in Iroquois Falls, Ontario. He was a widower and a lumber dealer. He said his next-of-kin was his mother, Ellemire Chartier who lived in St Ciprien (Napierville), Quebec.
