- Chartiers Creek near Pittsburgh, PA is named after Martin, who ran a trading post there Martin Chartier and his brother Pierre were members of La Salle’s expeditions to discover a water route to China. He and his brother later formed their own trading association. Martin later hooked up with a small band of Shawnee Indians, probably on the Wabash River. Martin and these Shawnees can be found at various times in almost every state east of the Mississippi River. In about 1692 Martin and his band of Shawnee show up in Maryland, but eventually settle in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania near the Susquehanna River. William Penn used Martin Chartier as an agent in his treaties with various Indian tribes.
