Delphis-Adolphe CHARTIER |
- Delphis arrived in the St Lazare region in 1884? from St. Jacques lAchigan, PQ with his wife and two children. In the beginning he lived 1/2 mile east of St. Lazare and hunted buffalo to sell the meat. In 1894, he built himself a stone house at the "old mission", 1/2 mile north of St. Lazare. He had the first post office in which his daughter Eva worked. In 1898, he undertook to build the roof on the stone church being built at the mission. In 1909, he built a hotel where St. Lazare is now and eventually sold it to a Mr. Lavallée. Following this venture, he built himself a pool room which was sold to "Buffalo Bill" Hebert. Both Delphis and Aurelie are buried at the cemetery of the old mission, 1/2 mile north of St. Lazare. According to St-Jacques church records, Delphis was a carpenter. When the 1906 census was taken, the family was living in Subdistrict 07 of the Marquette District of Manitoba. The name is indexed as “Chertier”.
