Name |
Guilluame CHARTIER |
- Born in LaFleche (Anjou) about 1635 from Jacques Chartier and Marguerite Loisel, he arrived as one of the members of the "Grande Recrue" (Great Recruit) of 1653; and he was engaged as a designer and tailor of suits. His marriage to Marie Faulcon (a Fille-du-Roi) at Notre Dame on 27 November 1663 has produced a large number of descendants that today respond to the name of Chartier or Robert according to their relationship with either Etienne or Robert Chartier, two sons of Guillaume and Marie. Guillaume was one of the pioneers of Pointe-aux-Trembles, which is where two of his grandsons made themselves illustrious as a major and a captain in the military. From Pointe-aux-Trembles, after a few generations, Guillaume’s and Marie’s descendants have moved into the precincts of Montreal and all across Canada and the United States.
- Guilluame is listed as Guilluame Chartier dit Robert on the ship's manifest for the vessel "Le Saint-Nicholas", which departed St.Nazaire, France on 6/20/1653 and arriving on 11/16/1653. It should be noted that the actual sea voyage did not normally take 5 months, even in those days! However, there is evidence that the original vessel sank almost immediately and the survivors were stranded on island just off the French coast until a replacement was engaged. After resumption of the voyage, the ship stopped at Quebec City and promptly burned to the waterline. So the voyage was fraught with peril!
