- When the 1880 census was taken, this family was living in Elk Point (Union), Dakota Territory. “Dindonne” was a farmer. Leopold and Steven both worked on the farm. Even though Mary is shown in this household, there is a Mary Schortke, age 17, working as a servant in the household of Noel and Elizabeth Johnduan. Elizabeth Johnduan was born in Canada ca 1831. Dieudonne applied for a homestead in Charles Mix County before 1883. He was granted a patent on 160 acres on 09/28/1898. The 160 acres was located in Section 31 99N 66W. When the 1895 South Dakota census was taken, D. Chartier, Fillman Chartier and John, Edde and Emmelin Chartier were living in Darlington (Charles Mix), South Dakota. When the 1901 Canadian census was taken, Dieudonne and Philomene and Edward (youngest child) were living in Ditton (Compton), Quebec. Both Dieudonne and Edward were cultivateurs. When the 1911 Canadian census was taken, Edouard was the head of a family that included him and his mother. Edouard was a cultivateur. He said he was naturalized in either 1900 or 1910.
