News: Welcome to our new site! All data from the old site (including photos) have now been uploaded (whew!)

I will now begin granting limited access to users that have requested it, however all edits will be reviewed by either Vernon CHARTIER or myself for the time being until we're sure the user knows how the new system works (and he and I are still learning it too!).

NOTE: The maps feature does not seem to work well on GOOGLE Chrome, so use the internet browser bundled with Windows.

    • Name Marie-Victoire CHARTIER
      • When the 1850 census was taken, Victoria Carter was living in the home of Julius and Catharine M. Higgins in Brandon (Rutland), Vermont. Julius was a merchant. When the 1860 census was taken, the John and Victoria Root family was living in Girard (Branch), Michigan. John was a farmer. Living next door was the family of Victoria’s sister, Desanges (Anna) Chartier and Mitchel Dion. When the 1860 census was taken, this family was living in Battle Creek (Calhoun), Michigan. John was a laborer. When the 1880 census was taken, this family was still living in Battle Creek. John and Theodore were lathers and Frank was a school teacher. When the 1900 census was taken, John and Victoria were still living in Battle Creek at 41 Beach St. Also in the household was a 25 year old grandson. The name appears to be Ray P. Van Horn. He is 25 years old and born in Michigan in May 1875. When the 1910 census was taken, John B. and Victoria Root were still living in Battle Creek at 41 Beach St. John was a laborer. According to a message on GenForum in the Root Family Genealogy Forum, Theodore and Frank Root both moved to Nebraska.
